Coping with Scarcity: The Lynwood Sports Association and Mobile Recreation Team

One of the biggest challenges facing communities in these tough economic times is just paying for basic services. Things we used to take for granted like a city baseball program for kids suddenly become unaffordable. It’s that or closing a fire station, etc.
That’s where the public/private/nonprofit partnerships really come in handy. The Lynwood Sports Association (LSA) is an all-volunteer organization that started off as a baseball program and evolved into a sort of adjunct parks and rec department, offering a full menu of academic, social and sports activities for 15,000 kids a year, who somehow manage to share the one large and four smaller neighborhood parks in Lynwood.

For instance, the organization partnered with the city to field a “mobile recreation team” that roams the city offering drop in programs for kids who live to far away to walk to the main city recreation/community center. Typically, these are what we often refer to as the “underserved” neighborhoods, some of the toughest, lowest income most crime ridden streets of Los Angeles County.

LSA is an important part of the community’s successful efforts to reduce crime and gang activity in the area.

Guest Blogging: Scott County

By Ryan Roberts

Time is flying here in Scott County, Kansas.  We have our first live All-America City presentation practice tomorrow night. The production is something that the whole community will be proud of and will show what we are all about here in Scott County. It is still hard to believe that the All-America City Finals are just two weeks away.

Memorial Day was a big day here in Scott County, Kansas. We had our annual salute to our soldiers who have died in military service. Every year the American Legion/VFW color guard and the Scott Community High School chapter of the National Honor Society do a great job of honoring those who have served our country.

The Park On The Plains has been a big hit this summer with the children of Scott County. In November 2009, the Scott community raised nearly $350,000 to build a brand new, fully-accessible park. As the weather has warmed up, this one of a kind park in Western Kansas allows all children no matter what their limitations are to play and interact with one another. The Park On The Plains was built by the people of Scott County who volunteered their time and energy to have the park completely built in one week.

We hope everyone is doing well and working hard on their presentations. One of the best parts about this process is people working together within the community towards a common goal and the support and encouragement of those who understand the significance of what it would mean for our community to be named an All-America City.

Hope to see you all soon and best wishes from Scott County, Kansas!

All-America Stories: Acworth, Georgia

Report from Scott County, Kansas

The excitement is building here in Scott County!!!! Our community has come through yet again in building support for the All-America City Finalist awards presentation by our community members. We are proud to announce that through local government, businesses, and non-profit organizations, Scott County has met our fund raising goal to send our delegation to Kansas City! This has only added to the momentum that the community has built, as well as a sense of pride in being selected as an All America City finalist.

Just last week the Jerry Thomas Art Gallery opened in Scott County. This addition to our community will help keep alive many of the stories of Native Americans and the Wild West here in our region. The event was attended by people from all across Kansas and the Midwest area.

At every community event there is excitement and discussion about who is going to be part of the delegation and who is helping develop the presentation. Our volunteers have been working tirelessly to develop our presentation and begin to make arrangements for the “SC to KC Caravan 2010.”

It has been a full community effort to get to the point where we are today. The finish line is a long way away, but many know it will be here sooner than we think.
